What is the co.space?
the co.space is a 21-person intentional co-living house at 244 East Nittany Avenue in downtown State College, PA, a 5-minute walk from Penn State's University Park campus. Residents are undergrads, grad students and young professionals who share meals, retreats and everyday life together. It has been running since 2013.
How much does it cost to live at the co.space?
For the 2027-28 lease, a furnished double room is $895/month and a furnished single room is $1,125/month, plus a flat $50/month shared utility charge that covers internet, gas, electric, water, trash and lawn care. Parking is optional at $100/month. That makes the all-in monthly cost $945 (double) or $1,175 (single).
What is included in rent?
Rent includes a furnished bedroom (bed, desk, dresser), fully furnished common spaces and kitchen, shared household and cleaning supplies, free unlimited laundry with detergent, commercial-grade wifi (through the utility charge), two twice-weekly house dinners, and two fully funded house retreats per year.
How close is the co.space to Penn State?
About a 5-minute walk to Penn State's University Park campus and right in downtown State College, so most residents walk to class, work, coffee shops and groceries and do not need a bus pass or car.
What are the lease dates?
All leases are 12 months. The 2027-28 lease runs August 19, 2027 to August 15, 2028. Occasional semester sublets open up when residents study abroad or take internships.
Who lives at the co.space?
21 residents: undergraduate students in 8 shared double rooms, and grad students and young professionals in 5 single rooms. Residents come from many majors, countries and backgrounds and share an interest in creativity, community and making a positive impact.
Do undergraduates get single rooms?
Undergraduate students share a double room with one roommate. The 5 single rooms are reserved for graduate students and young professionals and are assigned first-come, first-served.
How does the roommate matching work?
Once you are accepted, we host a winter meet-and-greet with everyone joining the house, ask about your roommate preferences, and make tailored roommate recommendations. You can also request a specific roommate or apply with a friend.
Is the co.space a party house?
No. The co.space is not a party house or a fraternity. Residents sign a House Manifesto that covers responsibility around alcohol and guests, and the house is shared with grad students and young professionals, so it stays respectful and livable. Creative gatherings like TEDx dinners or house concerts are welcome when the community agrees.
Is there someone in charge who lives in the house?
Yes. A live-in House Manager (a grad student or young professional) supports residents, coordinates house dinners and meetings, and is the first point of contact for any issues. The owners, Spud Marshall and Daniel Haverkos, are local and closely involved.
What is expected of residents?
Plan on a few hours a week: house dinners on Sunday and Wednesday evenings, a short weekly house meeting, cooking about three house dinners per semester (in pairs, about $5 per person), and two retreats per year in September and January. Residents who lean in get the most out of it.
Do I need to pay a large security deposit?
Not necessarily. We partner with Obligo, which lets residents skip a large upfront cash deposit by paying a small monthly fee instead.
Is parking available?
Yes, there are 10 parking spots at $100/month. Upper-class students get priority and remaining spots are assigned by lottery.
Can I apply with a friend?
Yes. You can apply individually or with friends. If you apply with a friend and you are both accepted, you each receive a $200 gift card.
How do I apply and how fast do spots fill?
Apply online through our rental application, then we will set up a conversation and a tour. Leasing for the next school year starts in the fall and spots typically fill well before spring, so applying early is the best way to get a spot.
Can I tour the house?
Yes. Book a house tour online or text us at (814) 971-4966. We are happy to do in-person or video tours, including for parents and students applying from abroad.
Are short-term or semester leases available?
Rarely, but sometimes. When a resident studies abroad or takes an internship for a semester, we try to match them with someone who needs a single semester. Note it in your application.
Are pets allowed?
Pets are not allowed at the co.space.
